Copper Notes

The year 2000 was a strong one for copper producers. The growth of electrical, electronics and telecommunications helped to drive worldwide growth in copper use. Domestically, copper prices rose from $.74 in 1999 to $.88 in 2000 resulting in an increase in the price of copper cable products of approximately 10%. So what can we expect throughout 2001?

Better than expected demand/orders in the construction industry and the continued explosion of the telecommunications market will continue through the first half of 2001, keeping prices stable around present levels. Many experts believe that the prices will continue to hover around $.85 per lb. through June, despite an apparent domestic slowdown, based on continuing strong worldwide demand. Experts believe that an average worldwide growth in copper demand of 4% is likely for all of 2001 with the price ranging from $.78 to $.90 throughout the year.

As always, we are closely monitoring our copper cable inventories to ensure that we maintain the broadest range of cables at the lowest cost, allowing us to pass the savings on to you.
